18-year-old wins International Hotel School bursary
The winner of The International Hotel School Johannesburg bursary was an 18-year-old Vaalpark Articon’s matric learner from Vanderbijlpark, Küng Jürg.
Every year, The International Hotel School holds their National ‘Ticket to life’ Bursary Competition with one student from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town standing a chance to win an opportunity to further their studies in the hospitality field.
In the final round, learners were expected to undergo hospitality ‘boot camp’, hosted by The Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre and involved a five-day learning and hands-on experience where each student involved was challenged in various hospitality departments, leading up to the prizegiving on Friday, July 11.
Jürg says that he gained most of his inspiration for this industry from his father who is a trained chef by profession and hopes to follow in his footsteps one day.
“I love pastry, so I hope to get a work in a big bakery one day,” he says.
For him, winning this bursary is an amazing feeling but adds that the whole experience of the bootcamp allowed him to understand the industry better and to develop relationships with other learners with the same passion.
With all International Hotel School diplomas and certificates being nationally- and internationally-recognised, this competition is a wonderful opportunity for learners.
This competition got underway in June this year and was held at each of the International Hotel School branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
Out of the many entrants each school received, five finalists were chosen in Durban and Cape Town respectively with six being chosen in Johannesburg, to vie for the winning spot in their province.
Only one winner at each campus could be chosen to have their full tuition fees paid for – for any IHS programme they wish to study – for the duration of the programme, valued up to R750 000 nationally. – @IschkeBoksburg
