City springs numerous leaks

First it was potholes, and now water leaks and pipe bursts.

It’s come under the Boksburg Advertiser’s attention that lately there has been a sudden increase in the amount of unattended water leaks and pipe bursts, which again places focuses on the metro’s inability to provide proper service delivery.

An Atlasville resident expressed her dissatisfaction about the inability of the Ekurhuleni metro to respond to emergencies speedily.

A water pipe burst outside Lindi Saaiman’s property on a Friday evening. She reported it the next morning, as well as on Sunday.

The person at the metro call centre she spoke to allegedly told her that turnover is between eight and 48 hours for the matter to receive attention, but the pipe was only repaired the coming Tuesday.

The burst water pipe on the corner of 5th Street and Span Avenue has eventually been repaired, but only after a month. It was reported on June 6. Contractors were called out to the site on June 15, where they dug up a hole and left it as is, without fixing the pipe.

According to Saaiman, she had to turn off the main tap to prevent the water from squirting.

“We have to pay for hundred liters of water wasted, not the metro.”

Henk van Eeden has been dealing with a water leak at his residential complex since the end of last year.

“Due to this, the paving is starting to collapse.”

Residents claim contractors were on site several times where they dug up two holes without repairing the pipe. The hole has also not been filled, but only taped off. The only way Gerrit Pretorius had access to water for his daily needs, was through help from his neighbour.

According to metro acting spokesperson, Themba Gdebe, the water leak in 14th Avenue, Anderbolt, was repaired on Wednesday, July 9. The leak was caused by damage to a 32-mm lead pipe supplying a water meter. But again, the leak had been reported on multiple occasions for a month.
