International Day highlights danger of illicit drugs
The United Nations’ International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26 each year, to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represents to society.

The theme of 2014 is “A message of hope: Drug use disorders are preventable and treatable”.
This day is supported by individuals, communities and various organisations all over the world. It is also a unique occasion to take a stand against a problem that affects the whole world.
To support and make this campaign a success, various government department, NGOs, individuals and communities organise events and campaigns to mark World Drug Day and send out a strong message against illicit drug use.
Gauteng MEC for Social Development Faith Mazibuko and the Sedibeng District Council will celebrate the day in Sebokeng.
The day is also supported by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag).
According to the organisation, 15 million people around the world struggle with a drug use problem.
Other facts according to the group include:
* South Africa is in the top 10 alcohol consuming countries in the world.
* Seven thousands deaths per year are the result of drinking and driving.
* Fifteen per cent of South Africans have a drug problem.
* South Africa has about 182 000 illegal shebeens.
* Sixty per cent of all crimes are related to substance abuse.
