Yet, it is still happening on a daily basis.
A Boksburg resident, Sandra Janse van Vuuren, is wondering who is responsible for the fires.
According to the Ekurhuleni Metro’s acting spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni’s Parks Department is not able to prevent the burning of grass on vacant stands in residential areas.
“With grasses being dead and dry during winter months, it is unfortunate that either passers-by fling burning cigarette stubs onto the grass, or start small fires in order to keep warm and leave these unattended afterwards,” he says, adding that, although the fires are unpleasant, they occur every winter season.
“We, therefore, call on people to become responsible and refrain from causing fires as this has the potential to cost a life,” he adds. – @IschkeBoksburg
