Teens receive indecent note at shopping complex

Two teenage girls recently received an indecent note from a stranger while they were at a local shopping centre.

According to Christo Ward, the father of one of the girls, his daughter and her friend were at the centre when they received the note addressed to them.

In the note, a man requests that the girls go to the stairwell to engage in sexual relations with him.

Lieut Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, say that they are appealing to the community to look after their children.

“If your child is missing, immediately phone your nearest police station and report it, there is no waiting period before you can report any person missing.

“You must then bring in a recent photo of the missing person and complete a SAPS 55 form,” she says.

Coetzer adds that the police are best equipped to find out if a missing person was a victim of crime, is a unidentified body, a casualty in an accident, if the person was arrested, or has disappeared for any other reason.

“Be aware of where your children are at all times, if you leave them at a certain place, such as a friend’s house, make sure you know who they are and that they are responsible,” she advises.

She says that parents should educate their children not to talk to strangers or take anything from them.

“Your children should always be accompanied by a grown up or responsible person,” she adds.

Parents should not leave their children unaccompanied at malls or shopping centres.

“They are your responsibility, not other people’s responsibility; there are a lot of youngsters browsing the malls or shopping centres without supervision, which leaves them vulnerable to a criminal,” Coetzer says.

Parents need to educate their children not to walk and talk on their cellphones, or text while walking around, as this makes them an easy target for the ruthless criminals. – @CarmenBoksburg
