DA councillors celebrate victory

DA ward Clr Hillary Coke and Clr Charlie Crawford celebrate the support their party received during the 2014 elections.

Final provincial figures on Saturday, May 10, indicated that voters showed thumbs-up for the DA in eight of the nine wards in Boksburg.

Both councillors admitted that although the party has strong support in most of the wards in Boksburg, the recent results indicate that there is still more that the party needs to do to increase its support in the informal settlements, Comet village and Ramaphosa.

Both councillors say although it is evident that the majority of the people in these areas didn’t vote for the DA, the party increased support in those areas compared to the previous elections.

The councillors described the results as a taste of what is to come in the 2016 local government elections.

“The results of the elections are without a doubt a vote of confidence in the DA in Reiger Park; we almost doubled the support we received in the 2009 elections,” says Crawford.

Crawford also thanked the people of Reiger Park for putting their trust and confidence in the DA.

“As the community leader I will make sure that I work very hard to improve the lives of the people in my community.

“I will make sure that most of the major problems faced by my community, such as crime, drugs, unemployment and lack of infrastructure are dealt with accordingly.”

Crawford says a piece of land has been earmarked for the construction of a new police station.

He vows to put more pressure on the relevant department to speed up the construction project.

“I will make sure that big projects also come to our community in order to create job opportunities for the people in my community.”

Coke also thanked the people in ward 33 for showing support for the DA.

Although the DA received only a few votes more than the ANC, she says the recent elections results show that people in the ward are still behind the opposition party.

Ward 33 includes Jerusalem and Angelo informal settlements, and Comet.

“I will continue to fight for a better life for the people in my ward, especially those that are living in absolute poverty in the informal settlements and Comet.

“People are being told that I have not done anything for them which is not true. Take for example the water project in Comet was initiated by me.

“I have been fighting for the Comet residents even before they staged the recent service delivery protest. I will continue to fight to get the metro to install high mast lights and arrange for mobile clinics in all the informal settlements.

“I will also continue to fight for my people to get permanent accommodation.”

She says a clinic for Witfield is also a priority.
