Thousands of meters of cable relpaced to address power outages

The metro has apologised to residents in Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge and surrounding areas for the inconsistent electricity supply recently.

Cable faults on two of the three feeder cables between the Witkoppie main substation and Sub 70 in Impala Park on Tuesday, April 22.

Only one feeder cable was operational while technicians repaired the other two cables.

“The one cable, however, could not accommodate the full load during peak hours, therefore technicians curtailed the load to some areas on a rotational basis,” explains acting metro spokesperson, Lebogang Ramashala.

One of the two faulty cables was repaired at 10pm on Thursday night, April 24, and full power was restored.

Technicians kept on working to repair the third cable through the night.

“It must be noted that the faults on these cables reoccurred during the three days where customers experienced outages, and the moment one fault was repaired another fault occurred.

“This went on over the three days and finally on Thursday night, April 24, the second cable tested clean and could be energised successfully,” continues Ramashala.

“A total of 3 600 meters of cable has been replaced on the same feeder cables thus far and the metro’s Energy Department will keep on replacing cables until all required work in completed.”
