Sentenced for being in possession of Cycads

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Thulani Tshabalala (26), from Vosloorus, appeared in court on a charge of rape.

He pleaded not-guilty on March 25, was found guilty on April 4, and sentenced on April 7, to 10 years imprisonment.

On January 7, the accused raped an 18-year-old woman.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided over the matter, and Vuthlari Mulungwa appeared on behalf of the State.

* Janga Munyaradzi (38), from Pretoria, appeared in court on a charge of contravening the national environmental management biodiversity Act.

He pleaded guilty, and was found guilty on March 31, and sentenced on April 3, to R10 000 or four years imprisonment of which R4 000 or two years imprisonment was suspended for five years.

On February 10, the accused was found in possession of a protected species (Cycads), and was transporting them without a permit.

Magistrate Ramufhufhi presided over the matter, and Jabu Matha appeared on behalf of the State.

* Merriam Maphosa (50), from Dawn Park, appeared in court on a charge of arson.

She pleaded guilty, and was found guilty on November 21, and sentenced on April 3, to 18 months of correctional supervision and 12 months of psychotherapeutic intervention.

On September 16, 2013, the accused burnt down the home of Jeremiah Maphosa, causing him to sustain serious injuries.

Magistrate Kganki Phahlamohlaka presided over the matter, and Vuthlari Mulungwa appeared on behalf of the State.

* Lawrence Selotole (35), from Rabie Ridge, appeared in court on a charge of possession of house break-in implements.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on April 3, to 12 months imprisonment.

On October 8, 2013, the accused was found in possession of a screwdriver and side cutters.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Palesa Setshedi appeared on behalf of the State.

* Jabulani Mabuza (51), from Vosloorus, appeared in court on a charge of contravening a protection order and crimin injuria.

He pleaded not-guilty on count one and guilty on count two, was found guilty on both counts, and sentenced on April 8. The magistrate postponed the passing of the sentence for five years.

On February 19, the accused contravened a protection order when he threatened to stab Angela Matibela and injured, insulted and impaired her dignity when he called her a prostitute.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared on behalf of the State.

*Alex Ngwenya appeared in court on a charge of attempted theft.

He pleaded guilty, and was found guilty on March 31, and sentenced on April 8 to R4 000 or 12 months imprisonment.

On February 4, the accused attempted to steal a tyre from Target Transport in Dawn Park.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared on behalf of the State.

* Bonakele Mathunjwa (30), from Vosloorus, and Bheki Khambule appeared in court on a charge of attempted theft.

They pleaded guilty, were found guilty and sentenced on April 3, to R3 000 or nine months imprisonment and a further 24 months imprisonment suspended for five years.

On January 29, the men attempted to steal copper cables from the Ekurhuleni metro.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared on behalf of the State.

* Mandla Mabuya (38), from Newcastle, appeared in court on a charge of dealing in drugs.

He pleaded not-guilty, and was found guilty on March 3, and sentenced on April 4, to eight years imprisonment of which four years was suspended for five years.

On November 14, the accused was found in possession of 1 004 Methaqualane tablets.

He had previous convictions of house break-in and theft from 2001 and house break-in in 2009.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared on behalf of the State.

* Brandon Louw (20) appeared in court on a charge of contravening a harassment order.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on April 4, to 18 months imprisonment suspended for five years.

On October 8, the accused contravened the order when he was loitering outside New Beginnings and tried to force his way in. On October 9, the accused entered Salem Ministries and later returned to New Beginnings where he forced his way in.

He was found unfit to possess a firearm.

Magistrate Hans Havenga presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.
