New contractor set to complete pipeline project

The pipeline project which has left open trenches across Boksburg is set to be completed by the recently appointed contractors by February 2015.

Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale says the delay in the completion of the project is due to the termination of service by the previous contractors, who left the project half finished.

The new contractors have, however, have started work in February this year.

Last year, Rand Water contractors dug several trenches in different Boksburg suburbs, while laying underground pipelines for water services.

These areas include the unfinished water pipeline work in Sunward Park, Libradene, and Boksburg South.

Since then, Rand Water has at least fenced off the trenches for safety reasons.

Ward 32 Clr Johan Hendricks says this project started nearly two years ago.

Hendricks says he is concerned that in Boksburg South extension three the supply pipes are leaking, creating a marsh.

“Good water is being left to run and it is going to waste,” says Hendricks.

He also says pipes are lying on the ground unconnected, while overgrown grass has created a hiding place for criminals.

“The Boksburg South extension three CPF have, however, done a great job patrolling this area to curb the possible crime.”

Mohale says they are not in a position to comment on the leakages at President Brandt Street since the infrastructure belongs to the municipality.

After fencing off the various open trenches across Boksburg, the Rand Water contractors have since left the project half finished.

Mohale says that the previous contractor’s performance with the project has posed a challenge.

“Rand Water was concerned about the performance of the said contractor, which is why it decided to terminate the contract that existed between the two parties leading to the appointment of the substitute contractor,” he says.
