Woman sentenced for possession of crabs

Palmirra Francisco (41), from Mozambique, recently appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates Court for transporting crabs.

She appeared on a charge of contravening regulation 271E and regulation one and 96, read with section 58, 68 and 77 of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998.

On February 18, the accused was found in possession , without a permit, of 14 bags containing Mozambican crabs and one bag of sea cucumbers.

The accused was on route from Mozambique to Johannesburg when the taxi she was travelling in was stopped and searched by police.

The taxi driver identified the woman as the owner of the bags.

The accused pleaded guilty, was found guilty, and sentenced on March 11, to R2 400 or 12 months imprisonment, of which R1 200 or six months imprisonment was suspended for five years.

Magistrate Abel Shilubane presided over the matter, and Maria Olivier appeared on behalf of the State.
