This matter came to light when a resident from Ward 43 phoned a radio station to say they can’t get the metro to fix the potholes, so they fix them themselves.
However, this was the first time Ward 43 Clr Bruce Reid took note of it.
“This is not allowed. Residents should report problems through the correct channels,” Reid says.
It seems residents aren’t exactly fixing the roads, but allegedly filling up the potholes with rocks, stones and cement.
According to Reid, this is an incorrect method, because it causes more damage to the roads and is also dangerous to motorists.
“Council can fine them (residents) for damaging roads if they fix it (the potholes),” Reid explains.
Reid encourages residents to report any problems on the new Ekurhuleni website at www.ekurhuleni.gov, or to contact the call centre on 08600 543 000.
If then, nothing happens, they should contact Reid on 072 820 3538, and present him with the reference number.
“I will take it up with the head of department, but I can’t do that if the residents haven’t reported the problem to the officials,” Reid says.
