Train victims offered condolences by Metrorail

Metrorail has expressed its condolences to the families of the two boys who were struck by a train in Dunswart on Tuesday morning, March 4.

Two school children died after being hit by a train as they walked between the set of tracks, near Dunswart station.

According to Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng, Metrorail has contacted both families and conveyed its condolences.

Speaking to the Advertiser on Thursday morning, Mofokeng continued to express their deep condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the two victims, on behalf of the organisation.

“Metrorail is horrified by the incident on Tuesday in Boksburg, which resulted in the death of the children. We express our deepest sympathies and sorrow.”

Mofokeng states that as a responsible organisation, Metrorail will assist both families with funeral arrangements, however, she stresses that this does not mean that the organisation is accepting liability for the incident.

It is believed the pair, aged 16 and 17, jumped off a stationary train to make it to school on time, when they were hit by an oncoming Business Express train, near Dunswart railway line station.

Mofokeng says heavy rains interfered with operations, leading to delays on some routes, including the East Rand routs.

Metrorail plans to intensify its rail safety awareness campaigns to prevent further casualties.

“As part of our safety awareness campaign, every Friday we go out to schools and communities to educate people about safety. We urge our commuters to always adhere to rail safety rules every time.
