Shaving or colouring your head to fight cancer
The East Rand Traders Square joined many other shopping centres by hosting a Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Shavathon on Saturday, March 1.
The Shavathon is an annual event where people can either color their hair or shave their head in support of those living with cancer.
Workplaces and organisations showed their support for the cause from February 24 to 28, while shopping centres joined in on Saturday, March 1.
This year marks the 11th Shavathon since its inception.
Simone Liedtke (19) organised the Shavathon at the Square, because she says it’s a good cause.
“If we can save a life, then why not?” she said.
According to the Cansa, shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors, because losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy.
Nick Bahari was one of the supporters who shaved his head on Saturday.
“I support this cause, because it’s very close to my heart,” said Bahari.
Stacy Leigh Annandale (13) and Carla Smit (13) are part of the flash mob from Benoni who danced at the Square, and have been dancing around the East Rand to raise funds for cancer.
The group is made up of students aged 13 to 18 years.
Annandale and Smit are not dancers, but contributed to the cause through collection of donations during the performance.
They would like to change a life and help people living with cancer through raising funds.
