Police arrest suspected robbers

Police recently arrested two men believed to be members of a gang that target and rob illegal underground miners.

According to spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, Sgt Phathela Mashudu, the suspected attackers were arrested while walking towards the abandoned mine shaft in Knights.

They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, seven live ammunitions, a knife, a torch and a school-bag with a chisel and a blanket.

“We believed that they were intending to commit robbery, but their plan backfired.

“This is after one of our officers, who were patrolling the area, foiled their planned attack,” says Phathela.

The 24-year-old man was charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and live ammunitions, and the other suspect faces a charge of possession of dangerous weapon.

They were also charged for being in the country illegally.

The suspects age 24 and 27 have already appeared in court on Tuesday, February 25, and they were remanded in custody until further notice.
