Postal workers on strike

On January 27, casual workers from the SA Post Office embarked on a strike, which is still ongoing.

According to Lungile Lose, SA Post Office executive of corporate affairs, the workers have ignored the final demand to return to their posts.

“While operations in most parts of South Africa are stabilising as striking workers have returned, casual postal workers in Gauteng are continuing with the unprotected strike action,” he says.

“A total of 1 461 employees did not report for duty on February 4.”

The SA Post Office has obtained an interdict against the striking workers, preventing them from engaging in any actions that may interfere with the organisation’s business operations while they are on strike.

The Post Office says that the main reason for the strike is that the casual workers are demanding that the Post Office employ them in permanent positions, something that the company considers unaffordable and unsuitable to operations needs, as it will result in untenable financial consequences.
