Fully-fledged school for Boksburg prisoners
Construction of a new fully-fledged school for Boksburg prisoners has begun at the Boksburg prison.
The single-storey modular school building will be subdivided into 20 blocks, and will consists of a library, classrooms, staffroom and other centres.
National Applications Centre (NAC) workers have already assembled three prefabricated blocks.
The centre is one of three prison schools that are set to be opened this year in the country, to assist offenders, juveniles in particular, to pursue their education while serving sentences.
This will bring the total number of fully-fledged prison schools in South Africa to 15.
Spokesperson for the Boksburg prison, Patrick Thobejane, says the introduction of a new school is part of the programmes that the department is implementing to try and change the lives of offenders for the better.
“Last year, our centre helped 186 inmates to pursue their education while serving their sentences at the Boksburg prison, both in the juvenile and adult correctional facility,” explains Thobejane.
Thobejane adds that, once the new school is opened, the department will make it compulsory for juveniles to further their studies while serving their sentences.
