Ekurhuleni youth to be educated on democracy

With elections around the corner, Ekurhuleni’s Youth Unit will run a series of workshops aimed at educating the youth about democracy and civic responsibility.

Ekurhuleni metro acting spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, says the workshops have been planned as a build up to the IEC’s voter registration weekend on February 8 and 9, so that young eligible voters who have not yet registered may see the importance to do so.

“The democracy and civic education workshops will focus on promoting knowledge on social cohesion among young people, the Constitution, national symbols and fostering national pride and patriotism,” says Gadebe.

Gadebe says the purpose of the workshops is to empower the young people of Ekurhuleni with enough information so that they realise the importance of registering and voting in the coming elections.

The workshops will take place between January 23 and January 30, from 10am to 3pm each day.

The first workshop will take place at the Mbikwaqindi Hall in Daveyton, on Thursday January 23, followed by another on Tuesday, January 28, at the Vosloorus Civic Hall.

The final workshop will be held at the Reiger Park Civic Centre on Thursday, January 30.

“Buses have been organised to ferry young people to the venues free of charge.
