Pupils asked not to speak African languages

African-speaking pupils at Boksburg Christian Academy have apparently been ordered to stop speaking in their mother tongues while at the school.

Principal of the school, Brenda Hills, asked parents to instruct their children to refrain from speaking in African languages at the school, and to speak only English.

However, it seems the decision met with objections from one of the parents, who is reported to have said it is a tactic that the school uses to discriminate against African-speaking pupils.

Hills, however, denies that the decision was made to discriminate against blacks.

“I have ordered the black pupils to refrain from using their African languages to help them improve their English and to make it easier for the teachers to correct incorrect talking or behaviour,” she explains.

“Our aim is to make sure that they are confident in using English as a language.

“I understand that some people may have misunderstood the intent of the school when we introduced the policy. We apologise to anyone who was offended.

“The instruction is meant to help pupils who are not proficient in English; children have enough time to speak the languages of their choice on weekends, after school and during school holidays.

“I have explained my decision to parents and most of them said they were happy with the decision.

“It seems as if the parent who complained has issues with the school.”

The principal insisted that the school will go ahead with the decision, because the majority of parents approved it and trust that it will benefit their children.

Hills revealed that, of the 117 pupils at the school, half are black pupils and she loves them as she loves herself.
