Damaged drain troubles business operators

An apparent non-functioning stormwater drain on North Rand Road has troubled business operators in the area for almost four years.

Heavy rain causes standing water on the road, parking lot and the pavement.

It’s not yet confirmed what is causing the problem, but businessowners believe that the water cannot flow away because of a stormwater drain clogged up with debris.

The Advertiser visited the area recently, and found it covered by at least 20cm of water, making access to the shops across the road difficult.

According to George Tinny, a manager at United Furniture Outlets (UFO), he has contacted the municipality, but the reaction has been to turn a blind eye.

“I have been trying to get the municipality to send out crews to pump the water and remove debris out of the blocked drains to allow water to flow more easily, but the metro keeps on stalling,” says Tinny.

“The annual flooding causes thousands of rands in business losses, because people do not want to come near or walk through the water.

“We want authorities to stop the problem once and for all. They must come out here and look at the drainage system designed to take stormwater from the street,” demands Tinny.

The Advertiser has approached the metro for comment on this matter, however, no comment received at the time of going to press.
