Crimeline for youth launched in Gauteng

In a bid to tackle the increasing number of criminal incidents and anti-social behaviour in Gauteng’s schools, the Gauteng Department of Education, in partnership with Crimeline, and the SAPS, have launched a Youth Crimeline to make schools safer.

The initiative was launched at Mosupatsela Secondary School in Kagiso, on Wednesday, October 30.

The launch on Wednesday was marked with a keynote address by Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy and representatives from Crimeline and the SAPS during a special assembly with learners at the school.

Creecy was quoted as having asked the learners to report any form of violence, whether it be bullying, physical and sexual assault and corporal punishment in their school.

“The police can’t be everywhere, but you are there and you have a lot of information about criminal activity,” said Creecy.

The Young Crimeliners initiative would be rolled out to school-by-school in the province.

According to a statement issued by Crimeline, the initiative was set up to provide learners from across Gauteng with tools to report crime and social issues anonymously, with the aim of not only rooting out criminal behaviour, but also providing social interventions towards incidences of bullying and abuse.
