Billboard controversy trends on twitter

Billboard inspired hashtag made it onto the trends list on Twitter after opposition party, Democratic Alliance, took responsibility for the controversial billboards erected in Gauteng on Sunday, October 6.

The billboards reading, “E-tolls. Proudly brought to you by the ANC”, are visible along the R21 towards the East Rand Mall, Boksburg and as well as the N3 and N1 freeways.

Mmusi Maimane, from the Gauteng premier candidate for Democratic Alliance, confirmed suspicions and stood firm in support of the message on the billboards.

The billboards poke fun at the ruling party’s role in the electronic tolling (e-toll) bill being signed into law last week.

In support of free speech social media networkers took to twitter and by Monday afternoon, the hashtag #ProudlyBroughtByANC had made it as one of the trending topics on Twitter.

It would appear that the hashtag was started by ANC supporters who decided to take to twitter to “defend” the good things that had been brought to the people by the ANC.

Tweeters did what they do best and turned what could have been a retaliation campaign by ANC supporters into a battlefield for all.

Some tweets made fun of a few ANC-related scandals such as the infamous guptagate saga, while others just made fun, period.

Thabo Mokhele with twitter handle @Tbose_BestT said: “It finally rains in Jozi #ProudlyBroughtByANC.”

Seemingly ANC supporters rallied behind what they believe the country could achieve through the work done by the ruling party:

Sherley Matlou using twitter handle @sheliz said: “With approximately 1.4 million students-beneficiaries from R32.8 billion in loans and bursaries between 1991 and 2012 #ProudlyBroughtByANC.”

Khusela Sangoni using twitter handle @KhulesaK said: “New, better improved road infrastructure in Gauteng and elsewhere #ProudlyBroughtByANC.”

On Tuesday afternoon, October 8, the hashtag was still trending.
