On Saturday night, September 21, gunfire erupted in the Tokyo informal settlement, leaving Lucky Kekana dead.
Kekana died immediately after sustaining three shots to his leg, neck and stomach.
The police managed to arrest the gunman a few days later.
No other people were hurt in the incident.
“We were on our way home after finishing our day shift when we received a tip-off about the suspect’s whereabouts,” explained one of the arresting officers, Const Sam Magonkontso.
The off-duty officers had to return to work to track down the man suspected of the shooting.
They managed to arrest him in Jet Park, when he was on his way to Tembisa, just after 6pm on Wednesday.
He was taken to the police station for questioning and took officers to the man who lent him the firearm he allegedly used in the shooting.
Officers arrested the owner of the weapon and charged him with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Upon investigation, it was found that the firearm was recently used to commit a robbery in the same area where the deceased was shot.
It was also established that it was stolen from a house in Elsburg, during a house break-in.
Both suspects will appear in court next week.
It is believed that the deceased and the one suspect had been involved in an on-going dispute over a woman, before the shooting.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing and for further investigation.
