Fed-up Comet residents demand action

Residents of the old mine houses in Comet took to the streets on Thursday morning, September 26, to demand action.

The large contingent of irate residents from the area marched through the streets of Boksburg to the Civic Centre, to hand over a memorandum to the Ekurhuleni municipality.

The memorandum set out the residents’ grievances and stipulated that feedback was needed from the municipality within seven days.

Their grievances were related to housing, electricity and water supply.

Some of the issues listed in the memorandum were raised during a march in 2009, but nothing has been done so far.

Residents say that the municipality has shown a lacklustre response, while the government action shows blatant disregard for them.

They are living in the dilapidated old mine houses, with no access to water and electricity.

Police were not present at the march and no violence was reported.

Thuli Siboza, one of the residents, said that they are fed-up with their living conditions.

She vowed that they will fight until their demands are met.

“Enough is enough; if the municipality does not respond to our satisfaction within seven days, we will take it further,” she added.

The marchers also threatened to boycott next year’s elections if their demands are not met.
