Lending a hand to the ducks
Martin Erwee, Toyota Knight of the Year, from East Rand Toyota, recently devoted his services to cleaning up a local eyesore -- the duck and geese dam situated on the Boksburg Fire Department (Leon Ferreira) grounds.
“It would appear as though some individuals have taken it upon themselves to use the dam as a dumping site, polluting it and its plus-minus 30 feathery residents,” says Erwee.
“It’s sad enough that homeless people in the area have reduced the numbers of these animals by more than half over the past six months, now they have to face being poisoned, as well.
“Although the dam is situated on the Boksburg Fire Department property, civilians have full access to it and the fencing around it has basically ceased to exist these days.
“We cleaned one area and barely dented the amount of waste and garbage.
“I organised for some of the Gauteng Toyota Knights and their families to help, but we’ll need an army to make a difference.
“We want to plead with local residents to report any illegal dumping to the Boksburg authorities and also to come feed the ducks and geese when they have a chance.
“Lots of babies have been hatched and it would be nice if we could do something for them.”
