Angelo fire victims rebuild their lives
People affected by the Angelo informal settlement shack fire have last week started rebuilding their homes.
This was after a fire broke out from one of the shacks, spread through the tightly packed shacks of the area and destroyed everything.
When the Advertiser visited the area this week, residents were hard at work, setting up their homes again.
According to community leaders, the victims of the shack fire received building materials from the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Management to speedily rebuild their homes.
The building kits include corrugated iron sheets, nails, doors and wooden poles.
The residents say, because the material they received from the municipality was not enough, they also had to go through the debris and salvage what they can to rebuild their homes.
Meanwhile, some of the victims including children and single mothers go to bed on an empty stomach.
They do not have food, enough blankets and clothes.
Some do not even have cooking utensils and furniture.
The fire left more than 50 people destitute and destroyed 41 shacks.
The fire was believed to have started when a paraffin stove was left unattended.
