DVD review: Hansel and Gretel blows my mind
I was captivated though, and nothing was going to remove me from my seat.

Firstly, parents, this is not a film for kids – I repeat, this is not a film for kids!
Secondly, parents, watch this movie! It is absolutely fantastic; dark, with all the elements of fantasy, blood, guts and goo and real comedy.
When I watched the film I was surprised at first, because I didn’t know that it was purely aimed at the grown-up market.
So much so that a bunch of people had to run out of the cinema with their children, and old folks who were shocked by the gruesomeness when the witches were killed had to get up and wiggle along out of the cinema.
And yes, I have watched it again on DVD – it’s just one of those you want to have in your collection.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is basically an action-horror dark fantasy film with black comedy elements, co-written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola.
It is a continuation of the German folk tale of Hänsel and Gretel, with a twist, though, I might add, it is not the one you remember as a child.
The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in the title roles of a brother-and-sister duo of professional witch hunters.
Famke Janssen stars as the deadly leader of a coven of evil witches who they seek out to destroy.
In my book, this film gets a five-star rating, but, if you are squeamish, rather live in oblivion and watch something like Princess Diaries or something.
Rating: 5/5.
