Rapists get life sentences

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Andreas Bila (60), a Mozambican national from Windmill Park, appeared in court on a charge of rape.

He pleaded not-guilty on February 27, and was found guilty and sentenced on August 26, to life imprisonment.

On February 26, 2012, the accused committed an act of sexual penetration with an 11-year-old girl.

Magistrate Kganki Phahlamohlaka presided over the matter, and Leon Naudé and Vuthlari Mulungwa appeared on behalf of the State.

* Mxolisi Elias Majola (27), from Windmill Park, appeared in court on a charge of rape.

He pleaded not-guilty on June 5, and was found guilty and sentenced on August 21, to life imprisonment.

On November 4, 2011, the accused committed an act of sexual penetration with a six-year-old girl.

He had a previous conviction of indecent assault from December 2000, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm from October 2005 and attempted rape from February 2010.

Magistrate Kganki Phahlamohlaka presided over the matter, and Leon Naudé appeared on behalf of the State.

* Beiji Tshabalala (40), from Brakpan, appeared in court on two charges of culpable homicide and a charge of driving without a licence.

He pleaded guilty on April 12, the court later changed the plea to not-guilty, was found guilty on July 22, and sentenced on August 23.

He was sentenced to six years for the culpable homicide charge, suspended for five years, with conditions, and to R500 or 30 days imprisonment for driving without a licence.

On September 3, 2010, the accused drove along Nigel Road, without a licence, when he caused an accident where two other motorists sustained serious multiple injuries and died.

The accused had two previous convictions of theft from 1996 and 1998.

Magistrate Kganki Phahlamohlaka presided over the matter, and Leon Naudé appeared on behalf of the State.

* Sherwin Arries (29), from Reiger Park, appeared in court on a charge of house break-in with the intent to steal.

He pleaded not-guilty on February 21, was found guilty and sentenced on August 23 to eight years imprisonment, of which one year was suspended for five years.

On September 17, 2012, the accused entered the home of Lemaine Xaka and stole two blankets and three pairs of shoes to the value of R600.

He had previous convictions of assault from June 2001, theft from August 2006, theft from August 2010, malicious damage to property from August 2011 and theft from December 2011.

Magistrate Ramufhufhi presided over the matter, and Nokosazana Tyeku appeared for the State.

* Official Tshabalala (53), from Vosloorus, appeared in court on a charge of possession of dagga.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty, and sentenced on August 23, to R5 000 or 18 months imprisonment with a further 18 months suspended for five years.

On July 27, the accused was found in possession of 279g of dagga.

He had previous convictions of theft and assault from July 1979, rape from 1980, receiving stolen property from 1980, malicious damage to property from 1982, three counts of rape and three counts of robbery from 1982, assault from 1988, house break-in from 1994, possession of house break-in implements from 2005 and attempted theft from 2006.

Magistrate Kalli du Plessis presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared for the State.
