Sports camp for girls from Ramaphosa

St Francis Care Centre, together with Boksburg Lake’s Rotary Club, and eight volunteers from the UK, will host 65 young girls from Ramaphosa informal settlement from August 26 to August 30, as part of a sports camp organised for school holidays.

St Francis Care Centre reached out to the UK for funding, not only for the running of the sports camp project, but also support in the running of the centre.

According to organisers Richard and Georgina Milligan, the eight volunteers have raised funds to travel to South Africa for seven days.

“During the course of their visit, the volunteers will deliver a five-day sports programme to 65 disadvantaged girls, aged 12 to 14,” says Richard.

The girls will be provided with food, clothing and gift packs as part of the whole experience.

Rotary’s Derek Fox explains that a suitable venue was the project’s biggest hurdle.

“Existing facilities at the Ramaposa informal settlement school are not adequate to allow sports to be safely coached or played.

“St Dominic’s have allowed this camp to be possible in Boksburg, by allowing the use of their excellent facilities,” says Fox.

He says the camp will be five days of fun, designed to let the children play and be happy.

“From this foundation we can allow our youth to be an active part in finding solutions for the very serious social issues facing them, such as, the Aids pandemic, violence, inadequate housing and insufficient school facilities.”
