A dice gambling game takes deadly turn

An Angelo informal settlement resident tells his story about the death of a 36-year-old man who was stabbed to death inside his shebeen, in the settlement, on July 20.

According to the resident, Londrick Vuma was stabbed to death on Saturday, at about 5.30am, after a dices gambling game resulted in a quarrel.

“Vuma was playing a dices gambling game with a group of men from his neighborhood before he was killed inside the tavern,” the resident says.

“The dices game turned violent after the tavern owner lost an unknown amount of money playing dices.”

The resident says Vuma refused to part with his money after he had lost the game, then confronted another player, whom the police suspect was the assailant.

The suspected killer apparently refused to give the money back and the two allegedly began arguing about the money.

“During the heated argument, Vuma allegedly picked up an empty bottle of beer and hit the suspected killer in the head,” he says.

“The suspect then retaliated by allegedly pulling a knife and stabbing Vuma in the chest, at least twice.”

Residents ran to the shebeen when they heard the commotion caused by the fight.

The residents then allegedly attacked the suspected killer with stones, bottles and sticks.

The alleged killer was severely beaten and the resident believes his chances of survival are “slim”, as he sustained serious injuries.

The suspected killer was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital under police guard.

No residents have been arrested.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Boksburg. Similar incidents have been ongoing since the past couple of years, whereby gamblers stab or shoot one another during dices gambling games.

* On November 10, last year, a 24-year-old man, who was playing a dice game with a group of men in Ramaphosa, was killed after an argument over winnings of R10.

The suspect allegedly murdered the man by stabbing him with a knife in his chest, before fleeing the scene.

Despite police raiding the dices gambling den on a regular basis, the illicit practice is rife in informal settlements.

Dark corners next to taverns are often frequented by men playing gambling games.
