New ID cards launched
The new Smart ID cards were launched on July 18, with former President Nelson Mandela being among the first to receive one.

According to the Gauteng Department of Home Affairs, as the process is phased in over the next five to seven years, members of the public will be advised as to when they can apply for the new card.
First time applicants will be requested to produce their birth certificate, as well as proof of address, minors will have to be accompanied by their parents and those who have ID books will need to bring them along.
It will take about 14 working days from the time of application for residents to receive their Smart ID cards.
The first issue of the card will be free, while a re-issue will cost the same as an ID book: R140.
