Amakhosi on course to lifting title
Soweto giants and Absa Premiership league leaders Kaizer Chiefs are still favourites to lift the title despite increased pressure from defending champion Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs, also known as the Phefeni Glamour Boys, as one of their many nicknames, currently enjoy a four-point lead over closest rivals Sundowns, although the champions have a game in hand.
Currently standing on 48 points after 22 of 30 encounters, Chiefs are on course to finish with 72 points which would set a new record for the highest points tally in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era. It’s known as the Absa Premiership for sponsorship reasons.
The 72-point haul would break Mamelodi Sundowns’ record of 71 set during the 2016 season.
Although Sundowns coach Mosimane tipped Amakhosi to break his troops’ record earlier in the campaign when Chiefs picked up 31 points from their first 12 encounters with 10 wins, a draw and a loss, the record seems a lot unlikely since then with Ernst Middendorp’s men losing momentum along the way.
What does seem likely is Chiefs breaking their league drought – with the Gold and Black having last tasted league victory five years ago under the leadership of Stuart Baxter when they finished with an impressive 69 points.
According to the Absa Premierships stats, an average of 62 points wins you the title – which Amakhosi is five wins away from their remaining eight games.
Bloemfontein Celtic, Stellenbosch, Bidvest Wits (twice), Sundowns, Chippa United, Baroka and Polokwane City make up Amakhosi’s remaining schedule, and with Sundowns being the only serious threat, the light is shining as bright as Chiefs’ colours at the end of the tunnel.
Not to mention that what a way it would be to mark the club’s 50th anniversary. – @SabeloBoksburg
