Grant payments run smoothly during lockdown
From March 30 to 31, provisions were made for the elderly and the disabled people, while child support grants is made available for collection from today.
The elderly and disabled people across Boksburg adhered to the Covid-19 social distancing protocols at all social grant pay points on March 30.
This took place after the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) implemented early payments of social grants during the Covid-19 lockdown period to avoid large gatherings of people at various pay points.
Hundreds of beneficiaries from Reiger Park and Ramaphosa queued for their payments at the Reiger Park post office. Before they got inside the post office, their hands were sanitised, and the post office staff had on their protective gloves and face masks.
The Reiger Park community patrollers were also present at Sassa pay points to help reduce congestion and ensure that beneficiaries maintained the required social distancing.
Thenjiswa Khonza from Ramaphosa informal settlement said the queue moved faster than expected.
“I would have loved it if they could provide us with chairs outside while we queue because our legs are not strong enough to stand even for a short space of time,” Khonza said.
Sassa offices will be closed until the lockdown ends on April 16 and no new applications will be processed until then.
