The fun-filled ninth edition of the annual Cansa Relay kicked off at 6pm on March 7 and saw over 2 800 supporters from all over Ekurhuleni and other metros converging on the Boksburg City Stadium, where they spent the whole night.
During the event, dancers from Rock-a-Tutu Dance Academy wowed the crowd when they gave an impressive performance of ballet, called Rugby Ballet routine.
East Rand Cansa Relay For Life supporters were treated to a truly spectacular event, with fun activities ranging from live performances to night-long walks and jogs with family, friends and community around the sports field.
The annual relay’s primary aim is to raise awareness of cancer, show both survivors and caregivers that the nation is fully behind them in the fight against cancer, and to raise funds to fight the disease.
The event kicked off with a memorable and emotional opening ceremony, including the reading of the Relay Oath. This was then followed by the survivors’ and caregivers’ laps. This was thereupon followed by the teams’ opening lap.
The teams, consisting of co-workers, families and friends, continued to walk the track until sunrise. Burning candles in luminaria bags, with photos of survivors and those who lost the battle with cancer, surrounded the track.

These teams led the opening lap for the different teams that turned up to take part in the all-night walk at the Boksburg City Stadium on March 7.
The event organisers told the Advertiser attendance surpassed the number of walkers seen at last year’s event. “I am so happy about the number of supporters who came along. It’s definitely an event that couldn’t have been made possible without your support,” Sonia Pretorius said.
Claudia Plato was at the relay. She is holding bags with photos of her late husband, Neville, who lost his battle with cancer, and her friend Chantal Gilbert, who is a cancer survivor. Seen with her are her daughter-in-law Kavita and son Nathan Plato.
Hundreds of people from across Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg took part in Cansa’s biggest annual fund-raising event, Relay For Life. Event organiser Sonia Pretorius (not pictured) said the event couldn’t have been made possible without the help of the teams, sponsors, volunteers and other stakeholders.
Summerfield Primary Schoool principal Joe Bantich received the award after it was announced that his school won the trophy for most funds raised by a school. In their pre-relay fund-raising they raised R65 000 for the event.
This team from Caxton East Rand also participated in the walk for a good cause. They are Melanie Engelbrecht, Annelette Nel, Tamara Ord-Baran, Linda Pretorius, Carlene du Toit and Jurie Hayes.
Walk for a good cause. Thousands of people, some with their furry friends, turned out to support the Cansa Relay For Life. It was a bit chilly around midnight, but overall, the weather fairly worked in the attendees’ advantage.
Tamara Ord-Baran and Annelette Nel from Caxton East Rand were clearly in good spirits and enjoyed the walk.
