Safety tips for bank users

A gang of thugs recently robbed a 59-year-old man, who was followed from the bank, of R90 000 in Witfield.

Due to increasing cases of people being followed from the bank reported at the Boksburg North Police Station of recent, the SAPS shares the following tips on carrying cash safely:

• Carry as little cash as possible.

• If you need to pay accounts, consider options that are a lower risk instead of withdrawing large sums of cash.

• Never make your bank visits known, even to people you know.

• Consider the convenience of paying your accounts electronically, consult your bank to find out about other available options.

• Consider making use of cellphone banking, internet transfers or ATMs to do your banking.

Safety tips for small cash-based businesses:

• Vary the times and days in which you go to the bank.

• Never make your banking routine known to just anyone.

• Don’t openly display cash bags or deposit books.

• Try to use a bank branch which is close to your business.

• Consider using the services of a cash management company.
