Leroy Merlin keeps Flora Farm legacy alive with tree planting ceremony

Each family was given the opportunity to plant a tree at the event and were encouraged to return in one year’s time to see how their plants grew.

Despite unexpected rain in Boksburg on January 18, the tree-planting event at Leroy Merlin was a success.

The site where Leroy Merlin is situated used to be Flora Farm – a garden shop and nursery that operated in Boksburg for decades.

So in the tradition of keeping the environment green and to keep the legacy of Flora Farm, Leroy Merlin invited the community to plant trees in the parking area.

Lance Mzyk, Lizl du Plessis, Jansen Nemeti, Trevor and Dylan Ashdown and Nadine Nemeti named their tree Olivia Wilde.

Approximately 70 trees were planted in the parking lot of the DIY and hardware store that will soon be opening its doors.

The trees consisted of olive and acacia trees as they are indigenous trees that have a positive impact on the environment.

According to Stephanie Lehoux, communication specialist of Leroy Merlin, the history of the site is in the heart of many inhabitants of the area.

“During the construction of the building, we have received many questions and requests from residents who were sad to see this garden disappearing, asking how we were going to keep a legacy from this very local story.

“This is why we involved families to come plant trees in the store’s parking lot,” Lehoux explained.

“It is in Leroy Merlin’s DNA to commit for a more sustainable world every day. We wanted as much as possible to make sure our new development in Boksburg would include a green part, and from the beginning the plan was to keep some of the bushes and trees of the site.”

Diaan Fourie, store manager, said the shop is positive about the outcome of the tree-planting event.

“People supported the event. I want to thank the amazing team of Boksburg for making the event happen, the developers for getting the parking lot ready and building this beautiful store and all our sponsors,” Fourie added.

Approximately 110 community members supported Leroy Merlin’s tree-planting event on January 18.
