Traditional Christmas fruit cakes, Christmas mince pies, ginger bread houses are some of holiday treats ensuring we continue the festive cheer throughout December and if there is one thing the George’s Bread & Co team at the K90 Centre knows how to do, it’s baking award-winning pastries. George’s Bread & Co won the most awards at this year’s Best of Ekurhuleni readers’ choice awards.

The company collected six accolades – Best Craft Bakery with Café, Best Bakery, Best Coffee Shop, Best New Restaurant, Best Pies in Ekurhuleni and Best Place for Party Platters.

The owner and founder, George Moustakis, said he did not expect the company to be the biggest winner.

“We are honoured and grateful that people voted for us. I’m proud of this achievement. I would also like to thank our staff members for their commitment and hard work.”

The Celebration Cake

Therefore, it was no surprise that the spectacular celebratory cake they made for this year’s Best of Ekurhuleni Readers’ Choice Awards grabbed the attention of many guests attending the event.

George’s Bread & Co made the cake that was the centerpiece at the fifth Best of Ekurhuleni Readers’ Choice Awards that was held on October 24 at Emperors Palace’s D’oreale Grande hotel gardens.

Piet Modrian of the De Stijl movement was the inspiration for the cake that consisted of vanilla, caramel, double chocolate, vanilla peanut butter and cream-cheese icing.

Lucia Smith, confectioner at George’s Bread & Co, said she was thrilled to bake the cake from an artistic point of view.

Lucia has been involved with all things sweet and sugary since she first cut her pastry teeth in the Carlton Hotel Pastry Kitchen 30 years ago. Many may remember her gorgeous, delicious, too-good-to-eat birthday and wedding cakes, produced with great love and attention to detail under the ‘Cakes in Bloom’ brand.
