Uncollected waste causes frustration in Boksburg

Some residents claim they have gone up to two weeks without their rubbish being removed.

Parts of Boksburg are drowning in rubbish as the metro is having issues to empty residents’ bins.

Areas such as Libradene, Bardene, Parkdene, Boksburg North and Beyerspark are lined with bins and black plastic bags the metro has failed to remove.

Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos and Ward 22 Clr Ruhan Robinson understand the delays are caused by vehicle breakdowns and issues regarding employees working overtime.

“It is understood that all areas will now only be serviced on the scheduled service date. The latest update I received was that all Monday areas should be completed today (December 3).

“By implication that puts all Tuesday areas in backlog. On the message, they apologised to the residents and stated they will inform us should the situation change,” said de Vos.

“Residents are frustrated and they just want the bins to be emptied as it is attracting flies and rodents. We’re in a deep crisis and it’s getting worse by the hour.

“Service delivery, in general, is a major problem in Ekurhuleni.”

It is understood that the metro will collect the extra black bags when they service the areas.

Robinson is also up in arms about waste not being collected and said that this problem should be sorted out immediately.

“Beyerspark and Boksburg North was last serviced on November 19 and Morganridge on November 20. This means Boksburg North and Beyerspark will again not be serviced on December 3,” said Robinson.

Bardene resident Brian Turner said his bin should’ve been emptied last week Thursday, but is still filled with rubbish.

“I still haven’t seen any truck. It’s unacceptable as I’m a tax and rate payer who is up to date with payments. It causes a health hazard when it’s not collected,” said Turner.

“I just want the municipality to come and empty the bins as we pay for this service.”

Another resident, Donovan Schult, also confirmed that residents of Parkdene have not had their refuse collected last week Thursday on the scheduled collection date.

“Refuse is now piling up on pavements in the suburb and becoming a health risk.  This is also not the first time that refuse is not being collected once per week, we are having to pile up refuse on pavements for more than 9 to 10 days at a time,” said Schult.

“The bins also do not accommodate the amount of refuse that is accumulating as a result of the non-regular collection so when the refuse removal team does eventually come and collect, they do not collect the refuse that is now piling up outside of the bins.

“This is a weekly service which we are paying for as I understand.  Will we therefore be refunded for the week which was not collected? ”
