Peterhouse Special Needs School, which runs as an NPO, is a small special-needs school which will be opening its doors in January.
This vision, the brainchild of Excelsior Academic College’s principal, Helen Derret, has now become a reality.
According to her, the school is registered with the education department of Gauteng.
“The main aim of the school is to offer a curriculum to learners with barriers to learning which prohibits them from participating in mainstream education systems,” said Derret.
“It is a co-educational school from Grade R to Grade Seven (ages 5 to 14) with a maximum of 12 learners per class. This is a dual-medium school.
“We will be catering for learners with autism, epilepsy, dyslexia, Asperger’s and mild learning difficulties,” said Derret.
“We will be offering a hands on, interactive nurturing approach with an individual education plan. We will also be offering them art, music and cooking.”
She said there will also be in-house therapists.
“Since we are a NPO, any donations will be greatly appreciated.”
