The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture requested approval during the recent council meeting to amend item B-HR (15-2006) to enable the opening of the swimming pools during the festive period between Christmas and New Year.
This comes after the mayoral committee took a resolution in September 2006 per item B-HR (15-2006) that all administrative offices be closed during the period between Christmas and New Year with the exception of those departments that render emergency and essential services.
The swimming pools, as they are neither categorised as emergency and essential services, remained closed during this period.
However, over the past years there has been an increasing public outcry and a demand from the community of Ekurhuleni for pools to be opened during this period.
It has been proposed that the item to be discussed in the November council meeting.
