Buy a blanket to support abused victims at Mercy Haven
Mercy Haven, which operates under the auspices of the St Dominic’s Parish Church, provides accommodation for abused women and children to heal in a safe environment.
Mercy Haven’s skills development programme has equipped mothers at the shelter with fundamental skills, such as blanket making and many more to assist them to gain financial independence.
The women are taken in at the centre and provided with basic needs, such as nutrition and primary healthcare, clothing, education and developmental assistance and, where possible, reunite them with their families.
So far since July, about 30 blankets, ranging from baby blankets, single and double-bed blankets, have been sold at flea markets and other public gatherings as a means of income for the mothers.
The blanket-making project was started by a house mother who taught the skills to the women in the shelter. The blankets are made, by hand, out of fleece material and do not require a sewing machine.
The process is very easy and quick and takes just over an hour to complete.
The aim of the shelter is to give these women skills that will empower them to be able to earn a living once they leave the shelter.
This gives them confidence to stand on their own two feet and do things for themselves and not have to rely on their partners.
The normal blanket costs R150 and baby blankets cost R120.
All the proceeds raised from the blanket sales are used to buy material and broaden the development programme by introducing reading pillows and other sewing skills.
The centre also helps the women to apply for jobs by sending out their curricula vitae to various workplaces. Other activities include book clubs, counselling sessions with social workers and psychologists.
