Metro in a constant battle to deal with illegal connections

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he noticed that cables are left hanging suspended in the air along Main Reef Road, between Lorant and Field streets.

The metro responded to a resident’s concerns about illegal cable connections in Main Reef Road.

According to Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, the metro spokesperson, there are several factors that cause illegal connections to be done, and often, these are criminally driven.

“A team of criminals, engaging in electricity theft, will do illegal connections to an informal area extorting high monthly participation fees from those who acquire the stolen electricity from them.

“These criminals defend their business violently, including against CoE officials,” said Cebekhulu.

“The City regularly removes all illegal connections and where possible, these criminals are identified and arrested. Where it is difficult to identify the criminals, we deploy a long-term approach to ultimately arrest them.

“People participating in these illegal connections, especially on an organised level, face a harsh sentence when arrested. City employees that aid in these practices, when arrested, will also be charged in accordance with the Act.”

Illegal connections can be reported at 0860 54 3000.
