According to City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, the accident happened just after 6pm and involved four vehicles, a minibus taxi, Ford Ranger, Mazda Six and a Polo Vivo.
The people injured in the collision were rushed to different nearby hospitals, including Tambo Memorial Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, Busamed and Tembisa Hospital.
The Jaws of Life had to be used to free some of the injured passengers who were trapped in the minibus taxi.

“In total, there were 16 people in the taxi, including the driver. Three of them suffered critical injuries, three others suffered serious injuries and the rest sustained minor injuries. The drivers of the three other vehicles escaped unhurt, but the passenger in the Ford Ranger was in a serious but stable condition,” said Ntladi.
The minibus taxi was severely damaged after a head-on collision between it and a Ford Ranger.

A fire and rescue team from the Kempton Park Fire Station attended the scene after a call was received just before 7pm. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet established, but are under investigation by the EMPD.
The cause of the accident is not known.
The accident brought traffic to a standstill as all lanes remained completely closed for about three hours while paramedics were attending to the injured and officials working to clear the scene.
