Almost five years have gone by since former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed, yet police are still struggling to find his killers.
The Advertiser approached the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for the most recent update on the slain shot-stopper’s case, and all that NPA spokesperson Hurbetin Phindi Louw could say is: “The matter is under investigation and the NPA cannot comment, lest we compromise the process.”
A few days after the shooting, police arrested a man believed to be the killer of Meyiwa. It, however, turned out that the man was wrongfully arrested and the case was subsequently struck off the court roll.
The wrongfully arrested man is now suing the state for R17-million.
The case, which has led to many believing that the justice system has failed the Meyiwa family, has now been fuelled by the passing of Sam Meyiwa, Senzo’s fathwe, who died on July 29 – still waiting for answers.
Meyiwa senior was reportedly rushed to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital in Umlazi after his health took a turn for the worse. He suffered a stroke, and according to reports, Meyiwa senior had not been well since the death of his son.
The Citizen also reported that Police Minister Bheki Cele said investigation into the soccer star’s case is still underway, and promised that the case would be resolved one day.
