Free gym classes for elderly

The ‘Ur Active Age’ is a full prevention and wellness programme aimed at improving coordination and balance to the elderly.

In her efforts to keep the elderly people in Boksburg fit, professional physiotherapist and Urban Ruins founding member, Leigh Ingle provides free gym classes for the older citizens.

The locally known physiotherapist said the reason why she decided to start the free gym classes was that most of the elderly people from Boksburg and surrounding areas cannot afford a gym membership, let alone transport to get to an exercise facility.

“Our gym facility provides strengthening and wellness activities to prevent the elderly from falling. The classes are fun as they also provide a sense of socialisation, and will combat depression and loneliness and give a person a sense of worth.

“The elderly’s strength and balance is measured and evaluated and monitored and recorded monthly as a way of evaluating their progress,” Ingle said.

Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am at 15 Pine Street, Plantation.
