Recovering addict focused on inspiring others to overcome substance abuse

"The last time at a rehab centre in Benoni, I learned to take things one day at a time. I’ve gained a lot from rehab.  They taught me that I’m not a bad person, but that I have a disease."

After almost losing his life because of drug abuse, David Branch (38) is now determined to inspire others with his success story.

“I started experimenting with alcohol and marijuana when I was about 15 years old. It acted as a gateway. Later on I also became addicted to drugs like crack, heroin, cocaine and crystal meth,” said David, who has been in recovery for three years.

“In the beginning it was fun and it gave me a sense of belonging. Slowly, after 10 years, it started taking its toll. It had a negative effect on my mental and physical health.

“I stopped going out. I preferred to stay at home to use drugs and I almost overdosed,” said Branch, who today runs a successful business in Boksburg.

“I was in denial and hid it from my family. I lied to them, stole from them and hurt them. Drugs ruined my relationship with my family and got me into dangerous situations. It made me lose my job, car and partner.

“This is when I realised I needed help. I wanted to get clean and went to rehab when my mom suggested it. I was about 25 years old.”

He said rehab is intense and hard work.

“You work on yourself for 12 hours a day. The first time wasn’t my last time in rehab. I started using again because I didn’t go to the aftercare meetings any more. I fell back into the mindset of an addict, which is a red alert that you are about to relapse.

He said he formed healthy relationships again even though it was difficult to regain his family’s trust.

“It is difficult because you have to work for their forgiveness.

“Now I have the most amazing wife, Michelle. She went through a lot with me and I’m extremely grateful for her support.

“Finding a job after recovering was nearly impossible for me. This is why I started my own business and it is picking up. I’m also a sponsor now. I’m helping somebody else with their recovery process through my experience.”
