Boksburg High inundated with more than 3000 learner applications

The system for the admissions applications for Grade One and Eight will close midnight on July 22. Subsequently, the placement period will commence on August 30 to September 30.

Boksburg High School has received so far 3797 applications for Grade Eight for the 2020 academic year, which is above the capacity of the school.

Boksburg High was among several schools that have received more than 3000 applications.

According to Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, more than 289 370 online applications have been received so far for the 2019 admissions.

“The Gauteng Department of Education is pleased with the outcomes of the online admissions for Grade One and Eight on the first day of launch on May 20,” said Mabona.

He said out of the 289 370 online applications for Grade One they received 136 854 applications and 152 516 for the Grade Eight applications.

“Some teething challenges we came across was that some parents received WA4 reference numbers instead of WA1.

“It was because the feeder zone maps were slow to load, due to the network connectivity, and as such parents opted for the within 30 km radius.

“This is receiving attention. Parents must not panic as we are working on rectifying the glitch. No one will be disadvantaged especially those staying closer to the schools.”

Mabona said the system was logging users out due to inactivity which was caused by the users being redirected to the map GIS System.

“Parents couldn’t apply for twins and triplets, however same have been resolved. We urge parents to make use of Google Chrome, as our site is linked with GIS Map, which makes it easier with regards to the addresses.”

“Google Chrome is faster and most compatible with the online application system,” Mabona said.

  • Administrative forms

Mabona said they have received complaints from parents, that some schools are compelling them to fill in their administrative forms before accepting required documents.

Mabona said schools are not allowed to do such, in this application period.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, said: “The online application system is the future. It provides for a fair and equitable opportunity for parents to apply at public schools.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming support and response from parents. Once more, we apologise unreservedly to parents who were frustrated by the slowness in the first few minutes after the system switch-on.”
