Wimpy celebrates Slipper Day with the elderly

Slipper Day is an annual Reach for A Dream initiative to raise awareness and funds for children with life-threatening illnesses.

The Wimpy at the East Rand Mall Entrance Three served coffee and muffins at the Witfield Park Aftree-Oord to ensure senior citizens were able to show their support for Slipper Day on May 10.

Wimpy offered free coffee (or hot chocolate to kids under 12) to people wearing slippers and a R10 wristband purchased from any Wimpy, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem store or Reach For A Dream branch to school, work, gym or shops on Slipper Day.

However, Wimpy heard that some of the senior residents were too fragile to enjoy their free coffee at Wimpy.

“I am so happy that we could celebrate Slipper Day with them, We knew that they were excited to participate in this initiative and when we heard that it would be difficult for some of the residents to come to Wimpy to enjoy their free coffee, we had to make a plan,” said Michael Nemavhola from Wimpy East Rand Mall.

“We care about senior citizens and we also want them to celebrate Slipper Day with us. Some of these residents are regular customers and this was our chance to thank them for all the support they have given us over the years.

“We also bought balloons to create a cheerful and colourful atmosphere.

Marie du Plessis, Alida Bekker, Chrissie Viljoen and Maria van Deventer.

“It is also understood that Reach for a Dream helped one of the resident’s grandchildren to reach a dream. They are all about making children’s dreams come true.

“The initiative is also growing as our wristbands were sold out this year. I believe it is because people want to help others and we told them a story about a child in need.”
