Safety concerns about revamped lake park

Adults were also seen gaining access to the park through an open space. They had to hold the fence and jump carefully so that they avoid falling into the water.

Despite the metro officially opening the Boksburg Lake Park on May 3, on May 4 the gates were locked which resorted to children scaling the gate.

Officials from the metro, led by the MMC for Environment and Waste Management Services, Ndosi Shongwe, officially reopened the revamped Boksburg Lake park to the community of Boksburg on May 3.

The Advertiser visited the park on May 4 and noticed that children had to scale the gate to gain access to the park and play.

While at the park, a Vosloorus woman who asked not to be named, said she was trying to phone the emergency number but she wasn’t going through.

Seen here is the space where visitors at the Boksburg Lake had to use to enter the park because the gates were locked on May 4.

“It’s really not safe for our children to be playing in a park that’s next to a lake, and worse with no guard to monitor their movement so that they don’t fall into the water. At least if the metro can try and secure the lake with a fence it would be better,” she said.

A local crèche visited the park to celebrate a birthday party for one of their learners.

The teachers complimented the metro officials for the park, but raised concerns that it had no ablution facilities.

The Advertiser is still waiting for a comment from the metro.
