#IMadeMyMark: Boksburg sporting stars share why they will be voting
It is almost time for the elections, and here is the opinion of our local sport stars.
Craig Huxtable (Bodybuilder)
It’s pretty cool that we live in a place and time where we can express our opinion for who is fit to lead us. The problem, of course, is when the system becomes so polluted that representatives are working for themselves and not the people, or, of course, you’re a minority against the majority.
On a small scale, voting is more effective. A small town or city is better represented by their culture. The bigger you get, the less representative you are going to be to that one small voice.
So you tend to cater to ‘the masses’.
Some will argue not to vote, I’ve argued it myself in my past. But I’m not sure I agree with that anymore. If everyone adopted that attitude we would quickly slip into a oppressive and controlling form of government, which has no intent to represent its people.
We are all looking to make our country more effective and better for our future generations, so questions cannot be as easily dodged.
But these are all ideals that work to keep democracy strong, so voting matters.
We can influence people by showing voting can make a difference.
The change for a better-run country starts with your mindset and what you plan on doing about it.

Chris Myburgh (Boksburg Rugby Club)
I think it’s important to vote because at the end of the day, a country without leaders might as well cease to exist.
You must pick a side, a side that will lead because it’s the leaders who determine where you want to go.
Looking at the state of the country at the moment, it’s not only the leaders who are responsible to fix it, but it’s going to take effort from everyone. Our leaders might be our voice to the world outside, but as a citizen it’s my responsibility to ensure the country I live in is properly run.

Alvandre Maart (East Rand United head coach)
I’m going to vote for change: voting gives you the chance to decide how the country is run.
If you have any complaints about the way the country is run, voting is a simple way to change things.
You can pick a candidate that suits your views and represent your views at a local and/or national level.
Adam Forbes (CMH Boksburg Cricket Club captain)
I think it’s important to vote because we all complain about how the government does things and the only way we can move forward is by voting, you can’t complain if you don’t vote.
