The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) received extra help from the community during its blood drive held at Sunward Park Christian Academy.
Sello Namo and Gabisile Mabaso from the SANBS said they urgently need blood due to the high demand.
“It is shocking that only one per cent of the population is donors,” said Mabaso.
“We, therefore, encourage the community to donate blood. Donors also receive gifts like earphones.”
Regular donor and parent Antoinette du Toit (42) said: “Blood is something we all have and we should treasure it. I always feel magnificent after donating blood. I will donate blood for the rest of my life and will recommend it to everybody,”
First-time donors didn’t let the nerves get the better of them on the day of the drive.
“If I ever need blood, I hope that somebody would do it for me. It doesn’t hurt that much and it is for a good cause,” said regular donor Danmar Botes (24).
The Pink Ladies Organisation also supported the event and created awareness of the situation of missing minors.
